Mother of The Bride - What You Can Expect Your Role To Be As Mother of The Bride

This morning I was browsing and came across this attention grabbing headline on MSN.com Today -  “Clinton juggles diplomacy, planning daughter’s wedding - Secretary of state says both roles ‘serious’, ‘stressful.’

The words ‘serious’ and ‘stressful’ really stood out to me but when I finally saw it all in context it took on a whole different meaning. Here is the context - Clinton agreed that both are "serious, important and stressful" referring to her roles as Secretary of State and mother of the bride.

While as a mother you may never be Secretary of State the likelihood of you being mother of the bride is quit real.  So I felt it was important to share with you what your role likely will be during this very happy time for your family. As the role of the mother of the bride has changed significantly over the years.

It appears that Mrs. Clinton may be playing the traditional role of mother of the bride where the mother of the bride do most of the wedding planning as she says -"Luckily we have e-mail now. I can communicate and people can send me pictures of flower arrangements or other kinds of decisions."
And if you ever get to participate in this way,  its one way of you realizing your own unrealized dreams of a fairytale wedding.

Unfortunately, these days, very few mothers are afforded this opportunity as your daughter will probably be the one doing the planning and her dream wedding may be very different from yours.
But do not despair here is what you can do to ensure that you enjoy the experience almost as much as she does:-
  • Be supportive by being a good listener and sounding board when called upon.
  • Offer to help your daughter find that wedding dress of her dreams and assist with other shopping.
  • Voluntary to help with selecting a location for the wedding and reception (can you say Bahamas).  And the honeymoon planning (... Bahamas)
  • Organize a dinner event for both families to get to know each other better.
  • Get together with the mother of the groom if possible and shop for the dresses you will wear to the wedding.
  • Be sure and discuss a budget for the wedding with your daughter and fiancĂ© as soon as possible, so that they are clear on you and your family contribution towards the wedding.
  • Assist with preparing the guest list for your side of the family.
  • Assist with making hotel accommodations for expected guest.
  • Help by sharing the couple’s  registry with all invited guest.
  • Serve as chief hostess and protocol officer at all wedding events. Make it your role to ensure that your guests are as comfortable as possible and that all of their concerns are addressed.
  • Simply be available to your daughter to perform any role that she may call upon you to do.

The Father of the Bride - A Reflection for this Father’s Day

There is no one as special to a bride on her wedding day as her father. And although he would  have been involved with the events leading up to this special day, the actual wedding day is the crowning moment for both bride and father of the bride.

On her wedding day, I am sure that the bride is experiencing a range of emotions but these are quickly steadied by the reassuring presence of her father as he performs his role of being her  confident and close companion on her travel to the wedding ceremony and accompanying her down the aisle as father giver.

And for the father of the bride, he gets the opportunity to see his little girl grow up into the beautiful lady that he is now so very proud off but must now give to another as she starts her own journey of being for her husband what her mother has been for him - a rock and pillar of strength.

There is no question that as the Father of the bride is proud of his little girl that has now grown into a beautiful young lady. The bride on this her wedding day is equally as proud as she spent  very intimate moments with the man who was there through the years with compassion, understanding, support  and love that has now made this day possible.

While the role that the father of the bride performs may varies from wedding to wedding, his role and responsibility in the life of his daughter is unquestionably to prepare her for her wedding day. To be apart of her life - the ups and downs, the teaching, disciplining, the dance lessons and bedtime stories.

It is not just writing the cheques for the wedding and showing up to walk her down the aisle. It is about  being there and being willing to set a good example in raising a child that would be proud of you for teaching her what a real man should be.  A man who has been to her mother what she wishes her husband to be to her.

So fathers as we celebrate this Father’s Day, let it not be just the commercialized event it has become with more than 9.8 billion dollars being spent annually on gifts. But focus on what you can contribute to the world by being the father your daughter deserve to share her wedding day - and with fond memories and gratitude during her father-daughter dance with you at her reception.

It is not easy being a good father of the bride, but then again it is not easy being a good father. The good news is that you now have the opportunity to be the best father you possibly can!.

Wedding Vows - How to Write Your Own Wedding Vows

As a wedding officiant,  I help persons of different faiths and varied life experiences in personalizing the wedding ceremony that is right for their special day - and whether your choice is formal and traditional or contemporary and casual, your wedding vows makes the day memorable not only for you but for your guest as well.

And while you get to choose from a variety of wedding vows incorporating your own traditions and preferences, more and more couples are opting to write their own wedding vows.

So if that is your desire here are some tips for you on writing your own wedding vows.

The first bit of advice to you is that while you want your wedding vows to be meaningful you also want to be as concise as possible. By keeping your vows concise you avoid overloading it with redundant and meaningless word which detracts from your intention and overwhelm your guest.  A short ceremony is always better and I promise, you will get lots of complements from your guest.

Secondly, be sure to allow your wedding officiant or minister to review and edit your vows. It will certainly help with the quality and completeness of the vows.

Let your feeling show.  Your wedding ceremony is the time to let your feeling show as you are declaring to the world your love for each other. So do not be afraid to express your feeling in your wedding vows. The good thing is that you can say anything that you want to say that is fitting for your relationship and wedding ceremony as long as you both agree to be married somewhere in the wedding vows.

Review what other have done. We all need some inspiration so feel free to look at what other couples have done and you will be surprised by how closely your feeling relates to others . You can also get lots of insights from wedding poems and songs.

Finally, while you can chose to write your wedding vows together or apart. I recommend that you do it together as it will give you an added opportunity to bond so get together.  And be sure to have plenty of facial napkins as I promise you, there will be lots of emotions!

A Unity Sand Wedding Ceremony - Bahamas Wedding Style

I am finding myself officiating at more Unity Sand Wedding Ceremonies as they are becoming quite popular not only for its keepsake and decorative result but also because they are much more practical for the outdoors where candles can be affected by nature.

And if a Unity Sand Wedding Ceremony is what you have planned for your special day then the Bahamas is just the place for you - as there is an abundance of sand!

The ceremony can take a few forms. You can either use three decorative glass vase, placing one color of sand into one vase and a second color into another vase to represent the Bride and Groom.

During the service the Groom pours a portion of his sand into the third keepsake vessel. The Bride then pours a portion of her sand in on top of the Groom’s in the third vase. To conclude, the Bride and the Groom jointly pour the remaining sand in each of their respective vase into the keepsake vessels. Thereby commingling the colors of their sand into a creative demonstration of two becoming one.

Or you can simply choose to pour your sand into the wind to represent the coming together of your lives.

And in the Bahamas you can get your two colors without having to use any coloring dye as there is naturally both pink and powdery white sand.

And if you need some ideas for your ceremony here are two Unity Sand Wedding Ceremony that your Wedding Bahamas Style Wedding Officiant recommends.

Sample Wedding Bahamas Style Unity Sand Ceremony - 1

WEDDING OFFICIANT: - “Today, this relationship is symbolized through the pouring of these two individual containers of sand one, representing you BRIDE and all that you were, all that you are, and all that you will ever be, and the other representing you, GROOM, and all that you were and all that you are, and all that you will ever be. As these two containers of sand are poured into the third container, the individual containers of sand will no longer exist, but will be joined together as one. Just as these grains of sand can never be separated and poured again into the individual containers, so will your marriage be.”

Sample Wedding Bahamas Style Unity Sand Ceremony - 2

WEDDING OFFICIANT: - “Please note this empty glass. Glass, itself, is made from sand and the sands of time have come together, melting into one piece to make this vessel. The sands of time should remind us all of our eternal love and our mortality. Today BRIDE and GROOM have chosen to represent their love to each other in a special sand ceremony. Please BRIDE and GROOM, take your separate glass of sand and alternate the pouring of sand into this joining vessel and united, repeat after me: You are my love for eternity. I blend with you. My heart is like these grains of sands, merging with yours. I am yours. You are mine. We are together forever like the sand, like the wind. We are one.”

Rings have been exchanged as a depiction of the bond of wedding for so long, and in such a big amount of different cultures, the origin of the practice is obscure.

Definitely , the circle of a ring represents perpetual love and the continually replenished promises of the married couple. The circle also talks to the repeated round of the heavens, as well as the never-ending return of the seasons, marked by cyclical ritual and party.

Additionally, the circle in rock art, holy stone arrays, and astrology represents both the Sun and the Moon, themselves astrological and alchemical symbols for the masculine and female facets of the cosmos.

The widespread custom of embellishing the plain gold or silver marriage band with numerous designs and patterns has been known since at least seven hundred AD, in both Pan-Hellenic and Celtic cultures.

Our Bahamas wedding planner would be happy to help you with any questions you may have about having your wedding in the Bahamas
